Look closely at the face
Check the photo at a larger size before sending it. The eyes and fur should look reasonably sharp, without obvious motion blur. For dark-coated pets, make sure the face is not lost in shadow. Soft daylight from a window or an outdoor shaded spot can help reveal detail without harsh glare.
Leave some space around ears, whiskers and the top of the head. A photo already cropped tightly may limit the layout choices. A simple background can help the pet stand out, but a favourite place may be worth keeping if it is part of the memory.
Use the original file where possible
A phone photograph can be a good starting point. Send the original rather than a screenshot, a thumbnail or an image repeatedly forwarded through messaging apps. A larger file is not automatically better if the underlying photo is blurred, so clarity and composition still need checking.
If an older photograph is the only meaningful image available, explain that in the enquiry. Its suitability depends on the actual detail and intended layout. Do not assume missing detail can be recovered perfectly. A smaller image area or a different composition may be more appropriate than forcing a large crop.
Give every pet enough room
For two or more pets, choose whether the design should use one group photograph or separate portraits. With separate pictures, look for a reasonably consistent view and lighting so one animal does not dominate unexpectedly. Adding many faces can reduce how clearly each one is seen.
A name or short phrase can support the photograph without competing with it. For a memorial gift, use the owner's preferred wording and confirm any dates carefully. Avoid adding a sentimental message by assumption; a simple portrait and name may be the most welcome choice.
